The Four Songwriters – Sketching

A painting I had been thinking about doing on and off for some years has finally been started. This particular sketching is based loosely around a photograph taken in a pub on Charring Cross Road in the heart of London town. The Porcupine, to be precise, a fine Victorian (I believe) building oozing, with character and characters. Many a time have I sat there with a pint, a new guitar, a new effects unit, a piece of music or a sketch book (in no particular order, and sometimes all these things at the same time!). This particular image brings back lots of memories, some great and a few sad ones – anyhow enough about that already!

At present I am squaring up and sketching on a Windsor and Newton canvas for my painting, that oddly is not so true to square, and this could account for any eventual miscalculations on the finished work! The canvas strangely also acquired on the very same road – ah, Cass Arts a fine shop for all your supplies. I am putting in the basic layout sketch. My friend Lu Lu suggests I could call it ‘The Four Seasons’, but I have already decided on ‘The Four Songwriters’. The painting is connected to “The Gig in the Field” show. More to come – let’s get the paints out!!!

Here’s an unzoomable teaser of my sketching:
